Hi, Naminara story Blog Readers!
It's Angie^^

For good parenting, internationally many parents believe that 'reading books' is helpful for
children's intellectual development.

In fact, parents try hard(?!) in several ways to make their children to get an interest in reading and
be familiar with books. Some kids, without their parents' great devotion, know the fun of reading.
For those kids, parents are willing to get more books with pleasure and even at this moment,
their livingroom might be ready to open for 'Home Library'. lol

And I am pretty sure these parents who have interests in all these book stuffs for their kids,
might heard of The Hans Christian Andersen Awards : 1956 - 2008.

The Hans Christian Andersen Awards is well known as the best awards for specialists in Children Literacy and Illustratration. It would be very honored if your name has brought up on the list of candidates for the Awards; it is like 'Novel Prize' in children's book field.

Since the first Hans Christian Andersen Awards had formed in 1956, IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) selects one best illustrator and one children literacy author once in every 2 yrs.

Till now there are total 55 prize winners including 22 illustrators and 28 authors.

The prize winners are the present best of the illustrators and authors who are all remarkably contributed to the development of Children Literacy.

Golden medal and certificate are granted to Andersen Awards winners. The conferment ceremony proceed during IBBY general meeting in every 2 yrs.

Moreover, as Bookbird Magazine reports all the process of selecting winners of Hans Christian Andersen Awards on the magazines, its authority and fairness to choose winners are guaranteed and
acknowledged.

Hans Christian Andersen Awards Winners 1956-2008

Last 31st March, 2008.
The 27th Hans Christian Andersen Award was held in Bologna, Italy.
And the most important news!!!
Its official sponsor had been changed from 'Nissan' to Nami Island in Korea.

Japan-based Nissan has sponsored 'The Hans Christian Andersen Awards' for last 16yrs but
For next 10 years from 2009, Naminara Republic(Nami Island) in Korea officially is Andersen's sponsor.

Looking back, Nami Island's International Children's Book Festival(NAMBOOK) raised
'Boom' of Children's books in Korea.

The festival has reached its 5th birthday on this coming October and it is widely seen as remarkable book festival in Korea and more than 70countries are participating in this festival nowadays.

Nami Island has been selected as an official sponsor of Hans Christian Andersen Awards
since last year; AND Nami families who fell in love with NAMBOOK International Children Book Festival and work under the moto of 'Eat, Drink, Spread books on a floor, Roll over in books and Rest on them. Just Be the one with them' took it as an international acknowledgement for their great effort and devotion to manage such a big cultural festival. Hooray~!

Nami Island and Nami families are so happy to be the sponsor of Andersen Awards, we even named a ferry to Nami Island after 'The Little Mermaid' of Andersen's children's story.

We are all excited getting ready for the next NAMBOOK010 International Book Festival right now.
We try to make it more creative and new and includes different types of activities, exhibitions, various cultural experiences and story-telling etc.

Come and visit to fairy tale Nami Island on October while NAMBOOK International Book Festival is holding on Nami Island in 2010. It would be fantastic!!

IBBY Announces New Sponsor of Hans Christian Andersen Awards

IBBY is delighted to announce that Nami Island Inc. of South Korea has generously agreed to sponsor the Hans Christian Andersen Awards for the next ten years!

Nami Island is an extraordinary island, owned by the Minn family and lying in the Bukhangang River, to which Korean families come for day trips, and where they encounter the wonderful world of books. The annual NAMBOOK festival that attracts children’s books, performers, and artists from around the world; the Centre for Environmental Studies; the Artists’ Centre and residential cottages where artisans and artists can come to work and live with nature; the UNICEF pavilion; the outdoor sculpture garden; and most especially, the numerous little nature libraries scattered throughout the island, make this one of the most extraordinary places in the world for children, as well as adults, to encounter books.

Led by the brilliant South Korean designer, illustrator, writer and current president of KBBY, Woo-hyon Kang, it is hard to imagine a more perfect sponsor for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Awards. IBBY is deeply grateful for this exciting new sponsorship.

At this moment, IBBY would also like to express its gratitude for the sixteen-year long sponsorship of the awards by the Nissan Motor Company of Tokyo, which, will culminate at the 31st IBBY Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark in September this year, where Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is expected to present the 2008 awards. Nissan’s funding has allowed the Hans Christian Andersen Award to maintain its unquestioned status. We thank the Nissan Motor Company with all our hearts for their most warmly appreciated support.

The Award’s international jury and the incontestable quality of its laureates assure that the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are still the most prestigious awards in the world of children’s books. IBBY’s international network of 72 countries ensures that the laureates’ books are known and read throughout the world. As Katherine Paterson once said after winning the Award in 1998: “The Hans Christian Andersen Award gave me the world.”

Now, we can move towards the next ten years, secure in the confidence that we have an exciting and vibrant new sponsor. Within the IBBY family, Woo-Hyon Kang and Nami Island are famous for their generosity, energy, enthusiasm and for the magic that they bring to everything they undertake. We believe that with their help the Hans Christian Andersen Awards will flourish and that we can bring the prize and its laureates to the world in even more effective and dynamic ways.

Hi all,
It's Angie again^^

I feel like 2010 would be special and full of exciting experiences, events and news(in good ways^^).
I also believed that many koreans expects something special and good things to happen because 2010 has sth that makes itself extraordinary.

(Hints! Recently I mentioned this a lot! lol)

2010 would be special because It is the year of 'White Tiger' that came in 60 years.

As the year of 'white tiger' does not come very often, people think of rare, unique and sth cool.

Moreover, since long time ago, many koreans believed that tiger was the symbol of Korea and
good omen that is valiant and secures you against misfortune.

If you want to grab golden chances and get good luck, you may come and check this 'White Tiger' on Nami Island ^0^

New mascot of Nami Island, Nami tiger!!

You might be completely taken in by this status..it is made of snow not stone!!kk

The Nami tiger would not hurt you bad even though you trying to take a photo with him.

Nami Island is...

"Situated 63km from Seoul in the middle of the Han River.
The island looks like a leaf floating gracefully on top of Cheongpyeong Lake.

The island has an area of 460,000㎡ and a circumference of 5km.
Formed with pebbles and sand, there are no mountains in the island.
There are trees tall enough to touch the sky, along with big grass fardens where deers,
ostriches, rabbits, squirrels, ducks and countless types of birds live together
providing a place where man and nature can coexist.

Nami Island was named after General Nami,
A brave name from Korean history who courageously fought in battles and dies at the age of 26.
In 1965, thousands of trees were planted by Mr. Pyong-Do, Minn.

The rain used to transform this place into an island.
It is now a land of songs and fairytales.
It became an island with the construction of Cheongpyeong dam.

Nami Island today provides a warm place to rest, where people can relax.
Human beings, animals and trees share peace,
love and harmony far away from crowds and civilization."

Hi, all^^

How was today?
It was about -14℃ in Seoul.
I just had a nice dinner with sis Eun-gom(her nickname) lol
and feel so comfy and full right now. It is perfect timing to write Nami story :)

**************** ** * * * ****** * *******************  *******************

Environmentally-friendly Green development.
Green-tourism.
Recycling.
These words are very familiar to Nami Island.

'SOJOO' bottle tiles on the wall that bounds Nami toilets

In the past, Nami Island had been once called as an amusement ground, full of garbages and bottles of Korean alcohol(SOJOO)! Nobody liked it.

But!

Nami Island takes this setback as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf.

The origin of problematic subject on Nami Island, 'SOJOO Bottles' became Nami's representative
'E-SEUL Garden'. E-SEUL Garden thesedays is decorated with SOJOO bottles.

E-SEUL means DEW in Korean. And in this case, E-SEUL came from the brand name of Korean SOJOO which is named Ahchim E-SEUL. (Ahchim E-SEUL = The morning dew)

Once SOJOO bottles were garbages and now these bottles are reborn as nice installation arts.

One of the popular gardens in Nami Island, E-SUEL garden!!

Besides E-SEUL Garden, Nami Island tried to find a way to transform(recycle) lots of garbages to art works. Nature and Ecosystem are hold at the center of Nami Industries.

Environmentally-friendly sightseeing scenic spot,
Naminara Republic!!

Many art works and sculptures on Nami Island are good examples for lots of big and small companies in Korea to encourage them to use recyclable wastes.

Marvelous tree that bears empty cosmetic bottles of SUL-HWA-SU(설화수). ^0^
Environmental sculptures made by employees from POSCO.
The fountain decorated by Scrapped glasses from SAMSUNG.
(attached pictures below)

Marvelous tree that bears empty cosmetic bottles of SUL-HWA-SU(설화수). ^0^

To do recycling is not only about saving lots of money and solving problems
how to dispose lots of amounts of wastes produced on Nami Island in proper, clear and perfect way.

Above all, all those wastes would be 'environmentally-friendly' disposed for common good.

Environmental sculptures made by employees from POSCO.

What Nami Corporation do right now possibly could be one of great solutions for running recycling system actively in Korea.

For people who come and visit Nami Island, without any doubt, Nami family will keep trying to produce recycled creative art works.

Nami families gathered all together and had the New Year greetings^^

Nami families (without these people, nothing would be possible! *.*) greet each other
beginning with the New Year's address by the president of Nami Island, Mr. Kang, Woo Hyon.

The group of Fusion National Music 'KATA' also showed the most joyful and powerful
performance to us. It cheered up all so much.

We visited a grave of Mr. Minn Byong-do, the founder of Nami Island as well.

Moreover, Mr. Joe Gu-hyung(75) was selected as a lifetime employee.

On White Nami Island, Nami families wore Nami jackets. Guess who is who! hahaha

Since 1978 he has been in charge of Nami shipping services.

He is one of eyewitnesses who always has been in Nami Island and undergone every moments of Nami industries developing.

He and his family also have a particular relationship with Nami Island.

His son Mr. Joe Sung-choon from Nami Hotel is about to get married with Ms. Park Mi-sun from Nami Hotel as well.

Nami Island's Lifetime Employee System is only applied for Nami employees who works hard and are honest and employees who still have a passion to continue their work; even though people are getting old, some of them still want to continue to work. For these employees, the system of 'Retire at 80' guarantees them a life-long employment.

The lifetime employees will be given chances to decide whether she/he would like to work till 80s or not.(By the way, they are able to quit the work anytime they want.) If they decides to work, they would earn 800,000 Won a month after they reached at the age of 80s.

                      Mr.Joe always work hard sincerely.

Mr. Joe sails the Long Qing Xia!!

Congratulations to Mr. Joe Gu-hyung to be the 6th member of lifetime employees and thank him for all his hard works and great devotion for brighter future of Nami Island!!

Let me introduce Namisum's mascots, ostriches brothers and sisters!!!

[Name]
Tata, Tami, Tara

[Origin] Canada (2009.12) // 2 half-grown and 1 baby ostriches.

[Habits] like to eat snacks.
like to walk all around Nami Island.
like to stay crouched in water during summer time.
like to look at themselves reflected on the mirror and tap on it.

[Introduction] As you entered the Nami Island,
you will see our ostriches brothers
                        and sisters.
You might feel scared, for the first
time, to get close to them as well as
curious to touch them. Ostriches have
tendency to peck at other animals that
are shorter than them with their beaks.

                        However, Nami Ostriches are different.
They are so used to live in Nami Island
with Nami people, they do not attack
people or feel afraid of them. In fact,
Tata, Tami, Tara became one of the
                        popular mascots of Nami Island.

If you see them in Nami Island in the
                        future, please treat them nicely
otherwise they will get lots of stress.:)

[Warning]

Ostriches are kickers!!!
Please, do not get too close to give them food or scream at them.
Moreover, do not either make them frighten or stressful otherwise they will never hurt you.

[나미나라 국가브랜드 01 타조]

It was exceptionally warm in the winter of 2001. The daily temperature range was extreme and this caused the frozen ground to melt in the afternoon and become muddy. It was very inconvenient for visitors to walk around.  Moreover, during the off season on Nami Island, there were nothing but horrible old houses and the closed facilities of the summer amusement park. It all just looked ugly.

At the end of December nine ostriches were donated by one publishing company. The ostriches were about two meters tall and visitors seemed to enjoy watching them running and prowling around the island, full of curiosity. People took photographs of the ostriches’ heads. In these photos viewers saw only an ostrich head along with the clear blue sky—not the uninspiring landscape.

“What a beautiful island!”

Visitors were impressed by the natural setting of Nami Island and so busy taking photographs of it that they forgot their muddy shoes.  That’s how the ostrich became one of the symbols of Nami Island. Visitors were also curious to know how African animals survived the winter. Well, the Nami ostriches were from Canada and were known to live comfortably in a temperature range of 40 degrees. Later, Nami Island released its other caged animals back to nature. Since then all animals -- squirrels, ducks, geese, rabbits, deer and peafowl – have become good friends with visitors.

The ostriches signaled a turning point. Nami Island had been transformed: weeds became flowers and garbage was recycled, a rundown amusement park became a scenic sightseeing spot and what was once noise turned to rhythm. In some ways, if the ostriches had not been able to survive winter in Korea, the fairy-tale island of Nami would not be in existence now.

" When I was young, my best friend gave me a doll as birthday present.
It didn't look too pretty but somehow become very meaningful to me.
Now that I no longer have her.
  I miss her so much...
The doll that had been sharing everything with me."

Hi, this is ANGIE.^^
Today I would like to invite you all to the 'Dolls & People' Exhibition,
to the tiny pure world that is told by children's view.

'Dolls & People'
[Period] 2009.12.12 - 2010.1.31
[Location] Swing Gallery in the Song Museum, Naminara Republic.

I am happy to be right next to you~♬

I feel I could tell you everything~♪

This is a part of lyrics of popular children's song in Korea, 'Pretty Baby Bear'

The lyrics tells you how much dolls could mean to people when they were young.

when we feel so
   blue,

   tired,
happy
or upset,

we need somebody to talk to
or who can comfort and listen but not to talk behind and look down on us.

As people are getting older,
As people are getting familiar with each other,
Dolls and People become real friends.

True friends
who can read your mind,
who can rely on you sometimes.
.
.
.
If you are hoping to meet somebody like your little friend,
If you want to introduce your little friend to your sons and daughters or friends,
Go for a travel to the precious memories,
to the moment your little friend soothed you quietly.

I will see you at the 'Dolls & People" Exhibition!
